Where Did All the Good Domain Names Go?!

Where did all the good .com and .net names go? Well, they where registered along time ago. If only we would have known 10 years ago that these Domains would be worth so much. A good, descriptive, short .com domain name can be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars! BUT, this doesn't mean you can't get a great domain for your site.

How is this possible? Every day tens of thousands of domains are being registered, and tens of thousands of domains are being dropped. Domains that are not renewed are deleted, and available to register. The reasons why a owner would not renew varies. They might not realize what the name is worth, or they may have simply forgot to renew it. But that doesn't matter. What does matter is that there are more available every day.

OK, here is what you have been waiting for. Where do you go to find these Domains? Probably the best place to go is Deleteddomains.com. They offer free searches in their recently deleted domain database. There are other sites that charge for this same service, but deleteddomains.com is as good or better!

What do you need to add files to your site?
you need a FTP client. We recommend SmartFTP, available at Download.com.
Be careful though! If you are not sure about what you are doing, contact your webmaster.

FTP to Your Site

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, allows you to securely connect to your site to access files. This is the same way a site is installed on the server. But why would I want to do that, you say? Well, there are a couple of good reasons.

1. Back-up your site
2. Add new pictures
3. Learn HTML

Backing up your site is a good thing to do. Make sure to back-up at each major update. This ensures that if your files are lost on the server you will have the most recent copy on your computer. This also makes it easy to go to another hosting provider.

You may want to add or replace pictures on your site. If replacing, you will probably want to make sure the new picture is the same dimensions as the old. You can view any picture you upload over the internet, by navigating to the folder with your web browser. You may be also wanting to experiment with HTML, and view it over the internet.

OK, I want to FTP, how do I do it?

First you need a FTP program, I recommend SmartFTP, available at Download.com. You will also need your username and password. If you are not sure what they are, contact your hosting provider, or your Webmaster. Once you have them, all you have to do is start the program, enter your address, username and password at the top and hit the connect button.

Once you are connected, you will see a few folders. There should be one named www or public_html. That is where your website files are saved. To back-up your site, simply click and drag the folder to your desktop, that's it! To navigate through the files, double click on one. To make a new folder, right click and select "new folder", and type in the name you want for it. To upload files or pictures, click and drag it from the folder on your computer to the folder you want it in on your site. It's as easy as that!

Make sure to back-up your site before making any changes.
We are not responsible for any changes you make to your site.
