What are ppc search engines?

By now, you may or may not of heard about ppc or pay per click search engines. Here lately, this has been one of the most popular “buzz” words used on the Internet. What exactly is a ppc search engine, and how does it differ from a search engine such as Google (Google.com)?

Search engines such as Google index (or spider) and rank sites based on content, keywords, in-going/out-going links and the ranking of the sites that link to the site that it indexed. Most of the time they do this for no fee, or a small one time or yearly fee. The reason why they don’t charge much to index your site may simply be that they want to include the entire Internet when performing searches. This would help them deliver the most relevant information to their visitors, and in turn increase the value of their service and visitor traffic. Sites such as Google make a profit from offering this free service to the general public. The traffic that their free service generates is attractive to other companies looking for an audience to market to. Google also has a ppc engine, which they call Adwords. If you visit Google and do a search, you can see the difference between ppc and indexing searches. The Adwords (ppc) are listed on the right and the indexed sites are on the left.

A pay per click search engine really is nothing like an indexing search engine. In fact, they are often referred to as directories or search directories, instead of search engines. Ppc search engines make a profit by referring visitors to a site. The site owners that use their service each bid on search terms. The higher they bid, the higher they rank among other sites for that search term. When the visitor clicks the link and visits the site owner’s web site, the site owner is charged the price that they bid for that keyword.

How can you take advantage of ppc search engines?

Ppc search engines can be beneficial to your site in many ways. They make it possible to rank high among other sites and send a high volume of traffic to your site. Of course, this all comes at a price, which can differ greatly from keyword to keyword. Bids on keywords can range anywhere from $.01 to $10.00 per click, and most ppc engines let you bid on as many keywords as you like. If you find that it would cost you too much to get a top 5 bid position on a keyword, try a slightly different version. For example, you have a web site in which you sell used cars. To get a top 5 bid for your keyword, “used cars,” may be more than you are willing to pay for visitors. So instead, try bidding on a top 5 position for “cheap used cars” or “pre-owned cars.” Then settle for whatever position you get with the keyword “used cars” at the bid you can afford.

There are other less obvious yet rewarding reasons to use ppc search engines. As stated earlier, search engines that index sites free, rank sites based partly on the amount of sites that link to it. Using a ppc engine is a great way to increase links to your site. When the indexing search engine indexes a site that you advertise on, it may see the link to your site, and increase the importance of your site. This can also help you achieve another goal: Search Engine Optimization.

Using ppc search engines should not take the place of using indexing search engines. These types of engines still provide a great service that will benefit any web site. Most of the searches performed on the Internet still use indexing engines, so optimizing your site to rank high with them is very important. A lot of current search engines have both ppc and free indexing services.
